Vegan Chicken and Dumplings

This recipe was a total hit!

My goal is to make vegan cooking easy so that you choose it every time! I think the best way to do that, is to take a conventional recipe and “convert” to vegan ingredients because for years, we’ve been cooking with these recipes we love. So, let’s make them vegan!

The original recipe is linked at the bottom. Here are the main substitutions I used:

Chicken – to – Jackfruit

Chicken Bouillon – to – Vegetable broth

Shortening – to – coconut oil 

Bacon drippings (gross!) – to – butter

Milk – to – hemp milk (or any nut milk)

The conventional and traditional recipe - made vegan!

  • 3 cups All purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp Baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Herb seasoning I used Bragg's
  • 1/3 cup Coconut oil do not melt
  • 1 Tbsp Butter do not melt
  • 1 cup Nut milk
  • 20 oz Jackfruit


  • 2 cups vegetable broth
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt



  1. Combine flour, baking powder, salt and herbal seasoning in a bowl. Stir.

  2. Add coconut oil and butter to the flour mixture. With your hands, massage the oil and butter into the flour. Make sure to flatten larger chunks of oil and butter into smaller chunks. The goal is to make the mixture crumbly. In baking, this is called to "cut in" (Read more here).
  3. Next, stir in nut milk. 

  4. Put dough out on a lightly floured surface. Roll to about 1/8-inch thickness.

  5. Cut into about 1-inch pieces.
  6. Once the broth is at a simmer, drop dumplings into the broth one at a time. Stir a bit.
  7. Cover and simmer for about 15 minutes. Stirring often.


  1. Make the dumplings first so they are ready to add as soon as the broth is warm enough.
  2. Bring 2 cups vegetable broth, 2 cups of water, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, 1/2 tsp thyme, 1 tsp. salt, and 1 tsp. pepper to a boil in pot.
  3. Reduce to a simmer.
  4. Add in the Jackfruit.
  5. Then drop in the dumplings per instructions above.
